There are easy to install self adhesive vinyl floor tiles because one only needs to peel off the protective layer at the back to expose the glue. Many homeowners like this type because it does not require separate tile adhesives, so it can help to decrease a step of the installation process. Prepare the existing floor surface before installing the tiles is important; this is to ensure that the tiles will stick properly. Here are five simple steps to ensure that the self adhesive tiles are properly installed.
Step 1 – Prepare the Surface for Installation
If the floor once had carpeting then the old glue left over after peeling off the carpet needs to get scraped clean. The old wooden carpet strips should also be removed so that the floor underneath gets prepared for the new tiles. If there are cracks or pockmarks on the floor then they should first get filled up with mortar or grout before the tiles are lain down.
Step 2 – Mark the Floor
Marking the center of the room is very important; this is where the first tile gets placed. If the first tile is not in the center of the room the tiles will appear crooked. First, find the center of the room, this can be done by bisecting the length of the opposite walls and running a chalk line in between them, the intersection of these lines is the exact center of the room.
Step 3 – Installing the Tiles
The first self adhesive tile needs to get placed on the exact center of the room. Before peeling the paper backing of the tiles, notice that there are arrow markings on them. These arrows serve as guides on how to place them correctly, the arrows need to point at one direction when installing the tiles. Lay down one corner of the first tile exactly on the center of the room; take care to align the edges with the chalk line. Then using the first piece as a guide, continue laying the rest of the self adhesive tiles right before reaching the walls.
Step 4 – Deal with the Edges
It is highly unlikely that the room is perfectly square and the floor tiles will fit seamlessly on the walls, it is almost certain that gaps will appear along the wall that are too small for an entire tile to fit. Tiles need to be cut down to size in order for them to fit snuggly against the walls. Carefully measure and cut the vinyl tiles using a heavy pair of scissors, remember that the cut side of the tile should be against the wall, and the uncut sides are placed besides the other tiles.
Step 5 – Allow the Tiles to Set
After laying the tiles down, they need some time to completely set. No one gets to step inside the room during the dry time depend on manufacturer's instruction. Only after the glue has set properly the new tiles can then last for many years.
