In building a new house, the subfloor is already sufficient for installation of the final flooring, eliminating underlayment procedures. If the floor finish is engineered or hardwood, a layer of rosin paper is all that it needs. If floor is subject for renovation it is advisable to change the underlayment because the subfloor may have already been worn out. Flooring underlayment must not be a thing to get confused of. It is true that flooring underlayment is sometimes needed and sometimes not because the subfloor is regarded the same. There are bright ideas to lay down underlayment before putting the finish floor.
Types of Flooring Underlayment:
• Plywood (AC-grade Plywood cut to size)
• Cement Board or Fiber Cement Board
• Orient Strand Board (OSB)
• Underlayment Panels (in 2x2 tiles, interlocking)
• For floating floor application: Foam, Cork, Quiet Walk, Floor Muffler, Cork, Proflex, etc.
Foam Type
Floating floors necessitate cushioned underlayment (carpet is not included). There is three in one type (3-1) and there is also two in one type (2-1). Three in one is used commonly, meaning 3 sections of underlayment.
• attach the plastic film for moisture protection
• the foam is attached to the plastic film for cushion effect
• the sticky peel-off tape to the actual flooring or subfloor.
This is type is considered too basic and not really durable. A lot of people often use Basic Underlayment because it is affordable but it only gives minimal benefits. Other types of underlayments are recommended but they demand a higher price. Those seeking some kind of quiet flooring should take a look at the upgrade system that will provide more absorption for sounds.
Quiet Walk Type
This fabric-like underlayment for hardwood flooring is eco-friendly because it is composed of recycled items. The Quiet Walk type contains barrier to guard off vapor and allows more absorption of potential moisture. It also provides insulation by keeping the ground warm in winter season and cooler in summer time.
Floor Muffler Type
As the name implies, this type of underlayment performs exactly what Floor Muffler does. It is commonly used for floating installations and is the choice for most engineered, solid hardwood and laminate flooring applications. This is highly recommended by a wide-range of flooring manufacturers. This type of underlayment is mildew and mold resistant. It is composed of synthetic materials that are light, flexible and strong for easy handling and installation in nearly all conditions.
Cork Type
This environment-friendly type of underlayment gives superior sound muffling properties plus it comes in a selection of packaging and thickness. It can be acquired by sheets or by rolls. For floating installations it should be laid loosely over the subfloor. It can also be glued to the subfloor.
Proflex Type
This type offers more cushion effect advantage. Proflex has a cracked isolated membrane for concrete moisture protection. It is rubberized so it can be easily be pressed on the floor for accurate installation. This type of underlayment for floating floor application is widely used at high-rise houses. The professionals knew exactly how to work with this type.
For structural stability, it is advisable to keep the flooring underlayment thin especially on the second floor or third floor as the case may be. Thicker application can pose problems in the long run. Underlayment is installed to support the flooring above and not the joists or subfloor below. It is important to solve the subfloor and joists issues before proceeding to renovation proper. Also consult hardwood flooring experts for proper assistance as to what kind of underlayment can be used in certain floorings.
